Tartar is a yellow or brown plaque that sticks around the root of a tooth. Tartar can appear on the tooth surface but is commonly found on the lingual of the tooth.
Scientifically, tartar is a mixture of components such as calcium carbonate, excess food, bacteria, dead cells… Thus, tartar can be understood as a “bacterial organization” causing many dental diseases such as gums bleeding, gingivitis, periodontitis, bad breath if the teeth are not cleaned periodically.
The operating principle of a tooth scaler is to create a slight vibration to gradually break up the tartar then make it fall out, the vibration is transmitted through the metal tool to enter tartar and break it.
Thus, scraping actually only affects the tartar. Our enamel is very hard and this vibration neither weaken the teeth nor affect the enamel if it is executed correctly.
Patients need to scrape tartar every 6 months. Do not scrape tartar too many times and often in a short period of time because it will make your teeth weak.
